White House Sues to Stop Publication of John Bolton’s Book

The Trump administration will sue to prevent John Bolton’s book from being published. The former National Security Advisor’s book, The Room Where It Happened, will reportedly allege ‘Trump misconduct with other countries’.

The White House announced it will sue to stop the book being released, claiming it contains ‘top secret’ information that could endanger national security. Bolton has denied this and any book about the administration would have to have been cleared before publication.

President Trump may already have undermined his administration’s case with comments this week where he suggested that any and all conversations with him are classified. In practice, such discussions are not considered secret and many books have been published based on such interactions.

“I will consider every conversation with me as president highly classified,” Trump said on Monday. “So that would mean that if he wrote a book and if the book gets out, he’s broken the law and I would think he would have criminal problems.”

The ACLU has now weighed into the long-running dispute, saying “any Trump administration efforts to stop John Bolton’s book from being published are doomed to fail.” Bolton’s lawyers are expected to issue a formal response soon.

The Trump administration has worked hard to prevent Bolton’s book seeing the light of day. An acerbic hawk, Bolton enjoys significant credibility in the conservative political community – or at least he did until the President began publicly attacking him.
