Lamar Alexander Hopes that Impeachment Will Make Trump ‘Think Twice’ About Future Conduct

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) is confident that the impeachment of President Donald Trump and the subsequent trial will spur the commander-in-chief to “think twice” about any actions that could bring about another House impeachment inquiry.

Alexander, who has indicated he intends to vote to acquit Trump, made clear what he thinks of the president’s conduct regarding Ukraine. “I think it was wrong,” he told Chuck Todd on Meet the Press, “but I don’t think it’s the kind of inappropriate action that the framers would expect the Senate to substitute its judgment for the people in picking a president.”

Todd asked if he thought Trump may feel encouraged by an acquittal.

“I don’t think so. I hope not,” Alexander said. “Enduring an impeachment is something that nobody should like,” and so Trump should “think twice” before making a similar mistake, he added.

Todd then asked the retiring senator if there was any instance in Trump’s life that he could point to as an example of him being chastened.

“I haven’t studied his life that close,” Alexander said. “But hopefully he’ll look at this and say, ‘That was a mistake, I shouldn’t have done that, I shouldn’t have done it that way.'”
