Fox News’ Contributor: Impeachment Is ‘Antithetical to Our Criminal Justice System’

Fox News’ contributor Emily Compagno made the bizarre claim on Friday that the impeachment of President Donald Trump was somehow damaging to the U.S. criminal justice system. Impeachment is not a criminal process, however, and is laid out in the Constitution.

Compagno spoke to Fox & Friends about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s suggestion that Trump’s impeachment lawyers be disbarred. Some of them have made bizarre claims over the course of the trial.

“It’s not a lawyer talking,” Compagno said. “What’s so difficult about those statements in terms of swallowing it. Because no matter where you fall on the political spectrum, everyone is entitled to a defense, everyone is entitled to due process and it’s antithetical to our criminal justice system to argue otherwise.”

“And I remind viewers that remember when bribery was not part of the articles of impeachment? She said on national air well, I’m not a lawyer. So who is she to start parsing arguments?”

“Emily, she is a politician,” co-host Steve Doocy said. “As we have said since the get-go, this is not a criminal proceeding, it is a political event.”

It wasn’t entirely clear whether Doocy was correcting Compagno or pushing back on her claim, but he is correct that impeachment is not a criminal trial and cannot affect them.
