Pompeo on ‘Imminent’ Iranian Attack: ‘We Don’t Know Precisely When and We Don’t Know Precisely Where’

The Trump administration has justified the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by saying there was an ‘imminent’ threat of attack by the Iranian government, but serious questions have been raised about this. No details have been offered and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo compounded the problem on Thursday night.

Pompeo sat down with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham and essentially admitted he didn’t know anything about the reportedly expected attack.

“There is no doubt that there were a series of imminent attacks that were being plotted by Qassem Soleimani,” Pompeo said.

“We don’t know precisely when and we don’t know precisely where but it was real,” Pompeo said.

Ingraham asked about President Donald Trump’s claim that Soleimani wanted to blow up the U.S. embassy in Iraq. Pompeo did not answer the question directly and no evidence has been offered by the administration to back up the President’s claim.

Pompeo is just one of a number of administration officials whose public statements have undermined the claim that an attack was in the works. If there was no such attack, the killing of Soleimani was most likely illegal under U.S. and international law.
