Fox’s Brian Kilmeade Falsely Claims the UN Security Council Authorized the War in Iraq

Fox News has spent a lot of time in recent days justifying President Donald Trump’s decision to kill Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, an act that may have been illegal. Following the House passing a War Powers Resolution on Thursday, the Fox & Friends crew were keen to argue that the President should have the right to authorize such strikes.

In a segment highlighting the apparent hypocrisy of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi supporting strike under the Obama administration but opposing the Soleimani killing, co-host Brian Kilmeade mad an extraordinary and totally false claim.

“He relied on his intelligence services to take out terrorists,” Kilmeade said. “This isn’t Japan and Germany against Allied forces. If that was to happen, every president from here to the future would ask for congressional votes.”

“The last time we had a war was against a country and President Bush did this: Asked the Senate for approval and he got 70 votes.”

“He asked the UN for the go-ahead and the Security Council said go ahead. There’s nothing illegal about it.”

Kilmeade’s claim is the exact opposite of what happened. The UN Security Council did not authorize the U.S. invasion of Iraq because UN weapons inspectors found no evidence of weapons of mass destruction in the country. Those weapons were never found and the Iraq War is considered illegal by the international community.
