‘He’s Always Fearful of Strong Women,’ Congressman Says of Trump’s Jabs at Pelosi

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) appeared on CNN’s The Situation Room on Thursday to weigh in on the upcoming impeachment trial of President Trump, in particular recent comments by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) on whether the process would be impartial based on what some of her colleagues have said.

Murkowski told an Anchorage television station she was “disturbed” by the efforts of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to work closely with Trump’s staff. Earlier this month, McConnell said he would be working through the process “in total coordination” with White House lawyers, adding that there is “no chance” Trump is removed from office.

“There is a reason to at least think a little bit about whether there will be a fair trial here, or, for the first time in American history, an impeachment trial with no witnesses, which seems to be what McConnell is saying,” Doggett said. “So I’m pleased that Sen. Murkowski spoke up on this.”

The two articles of impeachment adopted last Wednesday alleging abuse of power and obstruction of Congress have not yet been transmitted to the Senate, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has indicated she wants to be ensured of a fair trial. A barrage of tweets from Trump accusing Pelosi of conducting a “very unfair” impeachment has since followed.

“As far as President Trump’s tweets, you know what permeates them, as best I can tell, is fear,”  Doggett explained. “He is always fearful of strong women, but here he is fearful of the truth…that the witnesses that have been requested by [Senate Minority Leader Chuck] Schumer are not from out in left field; they are the people that surround this president.”

In a letter last week, Schumer requested four such witnesses, all of whom failed to testify before the House Intelligence Committee: acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, Office of Management and Budget official Michael Duffey, and top Mulvaney adviser Robert Blair.
