Republicans Stress ‘Unwavering Commitment to Security’ for Ukraine in Impeachment Report

The Republican Minority on the House Judiciary Committee expressed their support for Ukraine in their section of the newly released impeachment report. The Minority argued against impeachment in a section titled ‘Dissenting Views.’

While the dissent itself was predictable and retread the same arguments from the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees, Republicans had inserted a footnote at the very beginning. They attached the footnote to the heading ‘Introduction’ to make it more prominent.

“As an initial matter, the Minority wishes to note for the record its unwavering commitment to security for the people and nation of Ukraine,” the Republicans wrote in a section signed off by Ranking Member Doug Collins.

“Throughout this process, the Minority has been cast variously as against foreign aid, pro-Russia, or unsympathetic to the plight of Ukrainians who face unimaginable hardship in the face of Russian aggression,” the report goes on.

“To the Ukrainian people, we say we categorically reject these characterizations and apologize that the Ukrainian democracy has been thrust into the spotlight besmirching both of our leaders.”

The footnote goes on to congratulate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his election, despite the fact he’s been president for months now, and claim that ‘decent Americans’ share his values.

Of course, undermining Ukrainian security is precisely what President Donald Trump is accused of doing. Name checking Ukraine and Zelensky in this way will likely not be welcome news in the country, which is trying to keep its’ collective head down.
