House Judiciary Committee Approves Both Articles of Impeachment Against President Trump

The House Judiciary Committee has approved two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The committee voted on Friday morning to send the articles to the House floor. The President is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The committee voted on each article separately and on both matters the members voted along straight party lines, with 23 Democrats voting for adoption and 17 Republicans voting against. Democratic Congressman Ted Lieu was absent as he is recovering from a heart procedure.

Chairman Jerry Nadler ran an orderly proceeding this morning that saw no Republican attempts to disrupt the operation of the committee, as took place yesterday. Once the roll call votes were complete and the articles of impeachment adopted, Nadler adjourned the committee.

The session lasted less than 10 minutes but will go down in history. This is just the fourth time in U.S. history that articles of impeachment against a president have been adopted. President Richard Nixon resigned following the same event in 1974, before the articles could get to the House floor.

The full House of Representatives will vote on the matter on 18 December, according to reporting just before the Judiciary Committee met. They are expected to approve the articles, though some Democrats are likely to vote against impeachment.
