Retired Admiral: We’re ‘Moving Away from the Federalist Papers’ and Toward ‘Lord of the Flies’

Retired Admiral James Stavridis had a warning for Americans on Wednesday about the continued behavior of President Donald Trump and his defenders. The former NATO Allied Commander compared the ongoing attacks on law enforcement to the famous novel Lord of the Flies.

Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski asked Stavridis what he thought of the most recent events surrounding the President, with emphasis on his alternative facts on the Ukraine scandal and NATO leaders laughing at him behind his back.

“You know, I’m going to Denver tomorrow, and I’m going to give a commencement speech at metropolitan state university, which is kind of a 20,000 student enterprise where 65% of the students are the first in their family to go to college,” Stavridis said.

“What I’m gonna talk about is The Federalist Papers versus the novel the Lord of the Flies,” he said.

“This is really a collision between order and rule of law and increasing anarchy, which we see evidenced with this piece that you just mentioned, but also, Mika, you know, David Ignatius said a moment ago the Attorney General’s special position.”

“I’ll give you two others, Secretary of Defense and the head of the CIA. Those three positions are so central to these institutions, and when we have to worry about whether an inspector general is going to be overridden in one of those three positions, you start to feel that needle moving from The Federalist Papers toward the island in the Lord of the Flies.”

Lord of the Flies is a 1954 novel by William Golding where a group of schoolboys are washed up on an island and attempt to govern themselves only to experience violence and anarchy.
