Biden Campaign Denies Reports That He’ll Only Serve One Term if Elected

Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign has pushed back at reports that he has privately committed to only serving a single term in the White House if he’s elected in 2020. A report from Politico cited four anonymous sources who agreed Biden wouldn’t run in 2024.

“If Biden is elected he’s going to be 82 years old in four years and he won’t be running for reelection,” Politico quotes a senior adviser as saying.

The adviser suggested that Biden could serve as a transition figure, helping to get over the Trump years and allow younger Democrats to come through in 2024.

“This makes Biden a good transition figure,” the source said. “I’d love to have an election this year for the next generation of leaders, but if I have to wait four years to get rid of Trump, I’m willing to do it.”

However, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Katie Bedingfield denied that there was any discussion of the former VP serving just one term

“Lots of chatter out there on this so just want to be crystal clear: this is not a conversation our campaign is having and not something VP Biden is thinking about,” Bedingfield said.

If elected, Biden would become the oldest president in U.S. history during his first term and the first president in his 80s. His age has been an issue in the background of his campaign, though it remains to be seen if he will address the issue publicly.
