Democrats Announce Two Articles of Impeachment Against President Trump

House Democrats have announced two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. In a widely expected move, Democrats held a brief press conference where Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler unveiled the articles and talked about the evidence.

The two articles of impeachment are abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

“We do not take this action lightly, but we have taken an oath to defend the Constitution,” Nadler said. “And unlike President Trump, we understand that our duty, first and foremost, is to protect the Constitution and to project the interests of the American people.”

Schiff rebutted arguments made by some of Trump’s defenders about waiting until the next election or until the courts had ruled on whether witnesses who are refusing to appear can be compelled to do so.

“The argument, ‘why don’t you just wait?’ amounts to this: ‘Why don’t you just let him cheat in one more election? Why not let him cheat just one more time? Why not let him have foreign help, just one more time?'” Schiff explained.

“The President’s oath of office appears to mean very little to him, but the articles put forward today will give us a chance to show that we will defend the Constitution and that our oath means something to us,” Schiff said.

The House Judiciary Committee will now vote on both articles, which are expected to be approved and placed before a full vote of the House on or about 20 December.
