Joe Scarborough Mocks Republican Conspiracy Theories: Will We Investigate Pizzagate Next?

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough dismissed Republicans’ conspiracy theories in defense of President Donald Trump on Thursday as news filters through about Justice Department investigations into the origins of Robert Mueller’s probe. The Morning Joe host spoke to contributor John Heilemann about how GOP conspiracies had fallen flat.

Republicans have been relying on two things: the Justice Department inspector general’s report and the investigation by John Durham. Trump’s supporters hoped these investigations would prove the Trump campaign had been set up in 2016. However, reports now suggest that neither Durham nor the inspector general were able to conclude this.

“Let’s be clear about the import of this,” Heilemann said. “The President of the United States for the last year has been saying this IG report is going to prove that all of his conspiracy theories about what Barack Obama did, about the deep state, about Jim Comey, about Andrew McCabe and Lisa Page and Peter Strzok and all the people who are trying to take him down, this report was going to prove, he said it over and over again, it will be the biggest political scandal in the history of the country, worse than Watergate.”

“That report is now due out on Monday. You think Donald Trump is having a bad month on impeachment, when this report comes out, on the basis of the reporting we now have about it, which is going to apparently, again on the basis of reporting some fine newspapers have done, basically say all of it’s false, all of its fiction, none of these things happened.”

“And don’t forget John Durham is a US Attorney General Barr hand picked,” Willie Geist said. “They were flying around the world together to capitals to try to find something that John Durham has said he has not found.”

As Geist went on to say NBC had confirmed that Durham found nothing, Scarborough wondered what would happen next.

“We can wipe off this conspiracy theory,” Scarborough said. “Pizzagate. I guess we’ll have everybody investigate Pizzagate next.”

Pizzagate was the conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton was running a pedophile ring out of the basement of a pizza parlour. It originated in the fever swamps of the internet.
