GOP Congressman Thinks Impeachment Evidence Is ‘Crumbling’ Despite Recent Depositions

Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) remains unconvinced by mounting evidence that suggests President Trump directed the freeze of military aid in exchange for the Ukrainian president’s announcement of an investigation into Trump’s political rivals.

In fact, Stewart believes the information obtained through the depositions of key figures in the scandal is actually harming the argument for impeachment.

“I don’t think the evidence is building at all – and I’m being sincere on this – I think the evidence is crumbling,” Stewart told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week.

“I think the Democrats know they’re in trouble on this, which is why we keep moving the goalposts,” he asserted. “We went from some supposed quid pro quo … but we know that didn’t happen, and now [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi comes out and says we’re going to impeach and remove the president for bribery.”

“I think the longer this hearing goes on,” Stewart predicted, “I think the less the American people are going to support impeachment.”

According to the data analytics website FiveThirtyEight, 48 percent of Americans currently support impeachment while 45.6 percent oppose it.
