Lara Trump on the President’s Syria Withdrawal: ‘The Average American’ Would Have to Google the Kurds

President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has defended his decision to pull troops out of Northern Syria because the ‘average American’ doesn’t know who the Kurds are. The Kurds are longtime U.S. allies in the fight against ISIS, now effectively abandoned by the administration.

Lara Trump spoke to Stephanie Bream on Monday’s Fox News at Night. Bream quoted her a passage from a New York Times article about the troop withdrawal.

“President Trump’s acquiescence to Turkey’s move to send troops deep inside Syrian territory has in only one week’s time turned into a bloody carnage, forced the abandonment of a successful five-year-long American project to keep the peace on a volatile border, and given an unanticipated victory to four American adversaries: Russia, Iran, the Syrian government and the Islamic State,” Bream read.

“Your reaction tonight?” she asked.

“Well, Shannon, I think we should start with the fact that if you ask the average American out there, I think they would have to Google ‘Who are the Kurds, and why is America even over there fighting this war?'” Lara Trump said.

President Trump’s decision to pull troops has allowed Turkey to invade the region and attack Kurds, with many experts concerned that this will lead genocide. Many Republicans are also incensed by the decision and have moved to sanction Turkey in Congress.

“Well I think the President though has always been very direct about this, he said from the very beginning that he wanted to pull out of Syria, now he is almost 3 years into his presidency and he’s doing it now, so it shouldn’t be a surprise, and I don’t think the people should be hesitant to partner with the United States in any way as result of this,” Lara Trump said.

Trump is married to Eric Trump and is a campaign adviser to her father-in-law, the President.
