Republican Rep. Liz Cheney Suggests Turkey Invaded Syria Because of Democrats’ Impeachment Inquiry

Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney has linked Turkey’s invasion of Syria with Democrats’ push for impeachment of President Donald Trump. The House Republican Conference Chair told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade that Democrats were weakening the President, exacerbating the problems in Syria.

Kilmeade, who has been criticizing Trump for his unilateral decision to pull troops out of Northern Syria and abandon the Kurds, outlined his concerns to Cheney, including the likely return of ISIS. Cheney knew where the blame should lie.

“I’m very concerned about it, Brian,” Cheney said. “I think that what we’re seeing happen is gonna have ramifications not just in the Middle East but around the world. If our adversaries begin to seek weakness, if our adversaries begin to think we won’t defend our allies, that we won’t defend our interests, that’s provocative.”

“But I also want to say that the impeachment proceedings that are going on and what the Democrats are doing themselves to try to weaken this president is part of this,” Cheney said.

“Yep,” Kilmeade agreed.

“It was not an accident that the Turks chose this moment to roll across the border,” Cheney said. “And I think the Democrats have got to pay very careful attention to the damage that they’re doing with the impeachment proceedings.”

President Trump decided to pull troops from Northern Syria and abandon the Kurds – longtime U.S. allies in the fight against ISIS – following a conversation with the Turkish president. Cheney’s claim that Democrats are somehow responsible for the situation is risible.

Cheney later said that Trump could reverse his decision and stop Turkey committing massacres against the Kurds. She did not explain why the impeachment inquiry would stymie this.
