58% of Americans Now Support Trump’s Impeachment, Per Latest Poll

A new poll shows a huge swing in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump. A Washington Post-Schar School poll shows that a majority of Americans support an impeachment inquiry by the House of Representatives and almost half believe the House should call for Trump’s removal from office.

The poll shows that 58% of Americans think the House was right to initiate an impeachment inquiry, against 38% who don’t. Among those who favor impeachment, 49% believe the House should seek the removal of the President, while just 6% support the inquiry but not removal. Others remain undecided.

This poll shows a huge shift in favor of impeachment since the reconstructed transcript of Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was released.

Previous polls on the topic showed that a majority of Americans opposed impeachment. Between 37% and 41% believed the President should be impeached in earlier polls. This means there has been an almost 20% swing against the President since the Ukraine scandal began.

Support for the impeachment inquiry has risen 25% among Democrats, 21% among Republicans and 20% among independent voters.

There is a strong partisan divide, however. Eight in 10 Democrats support impeachment, while 7 in 10 Republicans oppose it. Interestingly, support for impeachment in the President’s own party stands at 3 in 10 and almost one fifth favor a vote on his removal.
