Democrats: Trump May Have Lied Under Oath to Robert Mueller

President Donald Trump may have lied under oath to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, according to House Democrats. A court filing alleges that the President lied in written answers to Mueller about his knowledge of his campaign’s contacts with WikiLeaks in 2016.

Trump refused to be interviewed in person but he did submit written answers. These are now the subject of a request by House Democrats for secret grand jury information as part of the emerging impeachment inquiry. Their lawsuit seeks the release of information that was redacted in the Mueller Report.

The Democrats’ attorneys have said this material “may also be relevant to the House’s investigation of the President’s solicitation of Ukrainian interference in the 2020 election” and “could reveal that Trump was aware of his campaign’s contact with WikiLeaks”

Trump told the Mueller investigation that he had no knowledge of contact between his presidential campaign and WikiLeaks but Democrats believe this was a lie. Trump’s former campaign chair testified that Trump had asked to be ‘updated’ on the documents WikiLeaks was dumping.

If House Democrats are correct, this could be a considerable development. Former President Bill Clinton was impeached in part for lying under oath in a court deposition.  It remains to be seen if the Democrats will be successful in obtaining the material.
