Trump Challenger Mark Sanford Refuses To Say If The President Is A Republican

Former Congressman Mark Sanford – the third person hoping to challenge President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020 – refused to say whether he believes Trump is a Republican on Monday’s Morning Joe.

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough outlined some actions Trump has taken that suggest he has abandoned Republican principles. Scarborough accused Trump of having a ‘$16 billion socialist scheme’ before his co-host Mika Brzezinski asked Sanford if the President is still a Republican.

“You talk about this campaign being about what it means to be a Republican,” Brzezinski said. “Is President Trump a Republican? And the Republican leaders in Congress who refuse to challenge him at times, are they try legitimate Republicans with conservative ideals? What do you make of what is happening?”

“I would certainly see the fact that whatever Republican is has gotten a bit murky. It’s a long way from where Joe and I started back in the early ‘90s,” Sanford said.

“Is the President a Republican?” Brzezinski pressed.

“That’s for other people to determine,” Sanford said. “I mean, he’s certainly labeled a Republican. I think that a lot of his actions are contrary to conservative philosophy which I think is what Republicanism traditionally was all about.”

Trump’s other opponents have been more forthright in their criticism of him, including former Congressman Joe Walsh, who is also seeking to launch a primary challenge against the President.
