Trump Tells Democratic Congresswomen of Color to ‘Go Back’ to Where ‘They Came’ From

President Trump still has the ability to shock us with his tweets.

In the midst of a Sunday morning tweetstorm that featured him retweeting a bunch of random followers, the president took aim at the “Squad,” the group of four freshmen progressive Democratic congresswomen of color who have recently been mired in a feud with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats.

And he told them to “go back” to where “they came” from.

“So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run,” Trump wrote on Sunday morning.

He added: “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

Of the four members of the Squad — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley — only Omar was born outside the United States, and she immigrated from Somalia when she was a young child and is a United States citizen. The other three were born in America.

So, essentially, the president is telling a black woman to go back to Africa, while also assuming other women of color are from somewhere else.

Meanwhile, what prompted Trump’s racist Twitter rant? According to Media Matters’ Matt Gertz, 20 minutes before Trump’s tweets, Fox News ran a segment on the Squad and focused on comments made by Tlaib and Pressley at Netroots Nation.
