Trump’s Fourth Of July Will Be About ‘Self-Flattery’ And ‘Narcissistic Travesty’

President Donald Trump will hold a huge celebration on 4 July to mark Independence Day. The event will be complete with tanks in Washington, DC – something Trump has wanted for at least two years. Critics have slammed the event.

“Trump is creating a spectacle of tanks & missiles on the National Mall where the great protests for civil & human rights have been held at a time when 140 million Americans are poor & low income,” Reverend William Barber of the Poor People’s Campaign tweeted.

“He thinks this is the sign of strength, but it’s a damn narcissistic travesty.”

The President will deliver a speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in what some are seeing as a mock imitation of Martin Luther King’s famous ‘I have a dream’ speech. None of this seems to both Trump, though media and social media backlash could garner a response.

CNN’s Stephen Collinson has suggested that Trump’s ‘grandiose’ event might play to his base and let him play the patriot, but could also become ‘an exercise in self-flattery’, like much of his presidency so far.

“As well as indulging his narcissism, the July Fourth event is highlighting his typical profligacy with public money, questionable ethics, a lack of transparency and a measure of chaos in the last minute organization,” Collinson wrote.

While most Americans will spend the day celebrating with their families, cable news will likely be hooked to Trump’s extravaganza event, which has been already been dubbed ‘authoritarian’ for its use of the military. The event will certainly be poorly received overseas where tank parades have very negative associations.
