Mike Huckabee Compares Opposition To Trump To Opposing D-Day Landings

On the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe, most networks were covering President Donald Trump’s speech live. Following his speech, the Fox Business channel turned to the issue of tariffs and interviewed former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee defended Trump’s sudden decision to impose tariffs on Mexico – a move that experts say will be very costly for car manufacturers and ordinary Americans. Host Maria Bartiromo then asked Huckabee about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s comments about Trump going to prison.

“Maybe they can get cells next to each other,” Huckabee said. “That’s absurd. And that’s why nothing is getting done, because the Democrats right now, with all due respect to them, they’re so much more interested in defeating Donald Trump than in saving this nation.”

“There ought to be a time where people put their politics aside to solve a genuine emergency,” Huckabee said.

“Imagine if back in 1944 people in Congress said, ‘No, we’re not going to support the President, we’re not going to support our troops.’ The world would be a different place today if people had put politics above the principles of freedom and a sense of responsibility.”

Huckabee’s comparison is historically difficult to justify. The D-Day landings were a closely guarded secret, leaving little possibility for public opposition in Congress. The US was already at war in 1944, so it’s unlikely political opposition to a military assault would have been palatable to the public.

Moreover, Huckabee has ignored the fact that many Republicans opposed involvement in the war before the Pearl Harbour attacks. The Republican presidential candidate in 1940, Wendell Willkie, ran on an explicitly isolationist and non-interventionist platform. Republicans also continued to oppose much of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s agenda during the war years.
