Trump And Democrats Spend Millions On Facebook Ads

President Donald Trump and 2020 Democratic presidential candidates have spent millions on Facebook advertising in 2019. Trump has spent more than any individual Democrat over the course of the year, but in recent weeks the Democratic field is catching up.

The Trump campaign has spent more than $4 million this year on ads targeting key voting groups. Democrats as individuals have spent less, but their collective spending has now surpassed Trump’s at $9.6 million. Trump has a significant war chest compared to the Democratic campaigns.

Interestingly, former Vice President Joe Biden has outspent Trump on Facebook ads for the past three or four weeks since he entered the race. This suggests that Biden has substantial resources at his disposal already – he has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on this type of advertising.

Trump’s advertising has largely targeted older Americans, who are a key constituency for him. However, Biden has also made a pitch for some of Trump’s voters. It remains to be seen whether Facebook ads will help Biden make any inroads with this important group.

In 2016, the Trump campaign successfully used Facebook ads to push his campaign, with post-election studies highlighting the importance of this strategy. Trump starts off with a major financial advantage as the Republican candidate. No doubt the Facebook war will intensify as the election season goes on.
