AOC Fires Back After Kellyanne Conway Accuses Her of Silence on Sri Lanka: Are You Implying ‘I am Less Christian?’

Following White House counselor Kellyanne Conway invoking her name to deflect from President Trump’s defense of his Charlottesville “both sides” response, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) fired back at Conway in a series of tweets, asking the Trump advisor if she was making implications about her religious faith.

During her Sunday morning appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, Conway sparred with host Jake Tapper over the president’s recent assertion that his equivocation on the Charlottesville violence in which he said there were “very fine people” among white supremacists and neo-Nazis was done “perfectly.”

While defending the president’s response, Conway brought up AOC at one point, claiming that while the freshman congresswoman has tweeted about the New Zealand mosque attacks “many times” she’s never once commented on the recent Sri Lanka bombings. The implication, of course, being that AOC won’t condemn radical Islamic terrorism.

While correcting a CNN analyst who thought Conway was falsely accusing AOC of not commenting on the recent California synagogue shooting, the White House aide said she was “referring to @AOC silence about the Sri Lanka massacre of Christians (not “Easter Worshippers” as Obama and Hillary oddly said).”

This prompted Ocasio-Cortez to fire back. Telling Conway that she was in Puerto Rico on Easter visiting her grandmother and “away from tech,” the New York Lawmaker noted that the U.S. territory continues to “suffer from the White House’s incompetent disaster response” before asking why Conway invoked her name Sunday morning.

“Are you trying to imply that I am less Christian?” Ocasio-Cortez asked. “What was the point of you bringing this up on national TV?”

After taking the Trump administration to task for its bungled response to Hurricane Maria, AOC wondered how Conway could “spin ignoring and neglecting the largest mass death of people on American soil in decades,” adding that the official death count from the disaster is now over 3,000.

“The terrorist attack in Sri Lanka was horrifying. Saying ‘Easter worshippers’ matters bc Easter is the holiest day of the year for Christians, & to be targeted on Easter highlights how heinous the attack was – just as saying yesterday’s #SanDiego shooting was on Passover,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in another tweet.

She finished up by accusing Conway of “using this as an excuse to stoke suspicion around my Christianity + faith life.”

“The Sri Lanka massacre was horrifying. No one should be targeted for their religion,” the progressive lawmaker concluded. “If you’re so moved, let’s do more to welcome immigrants fleeing religious persecution.”

As of this publication, Conway has yet to reply back.
