Trump Brags About Military’s Greatness to Lawn Full of Children Hunting for Easter Eggs

President Trump stood on a White House balcony Monday morning to boast to the children participating in this year’s Easter egg roll that the American military is doing great.

Flanked by the first lady and whichever unlucky White House staffer got picked this year to wear the Easter Bunny suit, the president wished the crowd a happy Easter. He then launched into his usual not-so-humblebrag about how well the country is doing overall. “Unemployment numbers are the lowest they’ve ever been,” he said. “Regulations, low taxes, our country has never done better.”

“And do we love our military? Our military is being completely rebuilt!” he said–incorrectly–to cheers from the crowd.

The president continued: “It was very depleted, as you know, a lot of the military folks can tell you. It is being rebuilt to a level that we have never seen before.”

This depletion, such as it is, mostly comes from the military being engaged in warfare around the world for almost two decades, a trend that Trump has done nothing to reverse. That he is “rebuilding” it is a talking point the president often uses without pointing to steps he has taken that are more concrete than throwing more money at it.

Bragging about the increased lethality of the planet’s largest military seems like a very strange speech for a holiday celebrating Jesus Christ and his exhortation in the Book of Matthew to “put up again thy sword into his place, for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” But what else would small children want to hear about?
