Ken Starr Raises ‘Concerns’ on Fox About Mueller Report’s Anti-Trump Bias Without Having Read It

Ken Starr told Fox News’ Bill Hemmer on Wednesday morning that he is concerned that the Mueller report, scheduled for release on Thursday morning, will be unfairly biased against Donald Trump. The reason he thinks this is because of the potential biases of the staff Robert Mueller hired to work on the investigation. “So many questions have been raised about that staff and their leanings and so forth,” Starr said, perhaps thinking of the president’s multiple Twitter rants about “18 Angry Democrats” investigating him.

Really, Ken Starr said this. The same Ken Starr who, when he spent most of the 1990s investigating Bill Clinton, filled out his own staff with Republican Party loyalists.

Mueller, like Starr, is also a lifelong Republican. But he hired lawyers who have donated small amounts to Democrats in the past. Perhaps Starr thinks Mueller should have hired Federalist Society members, as he did in the Clinton era.

His statements on Wednesday are a turnaround from December, when Starr praised Mueller’s “integrity as a nonpartisan prosecutor.” He apparently has a different speech prepared for Fox News, when he knows the network’s number-one viewer is likely watching from his residence in the White House.

Starr went on to caution against “cherry-picking” specific parts of the report and fashioning them as gotchas to condemn or condone Trump and others who were the subjects of the investigation. Considering the reaction of the president and his defenders to Attorney General Bill Barr’s four-page memo that carefully barbered the report when Mueller first sent it to him last month, that horse would seem to have long left the barn.

Starr also praised Barr as a fair-minded and “honest” lawyer. Anyone who remembers Barr’s work around the Iran-contra scandal or the unsolicited memo he sent to the Justice Department last year that helped him land his current job might beg to differ.
