WATCH: Nicolle Wallace Explains Why MSNBC Won’t Carry Trump’s Immigration Speech Live

The White House pulled a fast one today by hyping a campaign-style fearmongering immigration speech as a policy announcement to the cable news networks, fooling them into carrying the president’s race-baiting remarks live.

All except MSNBC, that is.

As the president was speaking, Deadline: White House host Nicolle Wallace noted that the network was deciding to monitor the remarks rather than air them live out of an “abundance of caution.”

“Five days before the midterm elections and a day after admitting to ABC News that he tells the truth only when he can,” Wallace said. “Today’s remarks come after weeks of engaging in a deliberate strategy of stoking fear about the humanitarian crisis in Central America. A slow-moving caravan of asylum seekers and migrants.”

She continued, “They also come after — come days after a war of words with House Speaker Paul Ryan about birthright citizenship. Donald Trump’s divisive speech has been cited as contributing to the climate in which the synagogue shooter targeted Jewish Americans and the pipe bomber targeted Trump’s critics.”

Saying that “he’s used immigration in blatantly political ways,” Wallace told viewers that they would fact-check the remarks “against his rhetoric and record on immigration” and then bring them any important news.

Meanwhile, CNN’s Jake Tapper, who eventually pulled away as the president was taking questions from reporters, seethed over the bait-and-switch.

“It’s not the first time this White House has not been honest but it’s obviously very disappointing when we bring you that news because we were told the president was going to be presenting the policy and he just regurgitates the same speech he gives every night on the campaign trail,” he said.
