Kavanaugh Ally: Blasey Ford’s Allegations Could Just Be Describing ‘Rough Horseplay’

With Christine Blasey Ford speaking out on the confidential letter she wrote Democratic lawmakers detailing allegations that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her while they were both in high school, Kavanaugh’s defenders have tried out several tactics when it comes to dismissing the accusations and undermining Ford’s credibility. During a CNN hit earlier today, Judicial Crisis Network’s Carrie Severino went with the ‘Kavanaugh was just playing around’ line of defense.

Speaking to anchor Kate Bolduan, Severino — who has been all over cable news in recent days — complained about Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) remaining quiet about the letter for weeks, stating that she didn’t think the allegations were “credible or serious or relevant to this question of his confirmation or she was holding them back for an intentional last-minute character smear.”

After Bolduan pointed out that Feinstein was honoring the wishes of Dr. Ford in terms of not revealing the information, she asked Severino if Ford’s story would be disqualifying to Kavanaugh if it turned out to be true.

“Look, her allegations cover a whole range of conduct from boorishness and too rough horseplay to attempted rape,” the JCN policy director responded. “Obviously, if you go to rape, yes, that is a really serious allegation. But this is why it will be useful to have this hearing, so we can even figure out what some of the specifics on those allegations are.”

Bolduan interjected, “One thing though, Carrie, I don’t think anywhere in there she’s saying this is boorish horseplay at all in her letter and I don’t that’s at all what she’s suggesting.”

“She’s certainly implying that it’s attempted rape,” Severino said. “You have to look at — there’s 35 years of memory that we’re trying to play with here. and I’m saying that the behavior she described could describe a whole range of things.”

She continued, “I know her perception of it was one way. I’m just saying, I think we have to get all of the facts. that said, Judge Kavanaugh said it didn’t happen at all. Under any interpretation, he said I wasn’t at a party like that. This didn’t happen, period.”

It should be noted that following the Ford allegations, Judicial Crisis Network launched a $1.5 million pro-Kavanaugh ad buy that features a lifelong friend of the judge’s defending him.
