America’s Verdict On Donald Trump: Not Smart And Not Popular

As the United States prepares to mark the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, new polls show that the country is led by a historically unpopular president. When President Donald Trump gives his remarks commemorating the attacks today, he will do so as a president under a cloud of disapproval.

Trump’s approval rating has hovered between 42% and 36%, according to recent polls. These numbers are not where Trump wants to be. His low poll numbers endanger his chance at re-election just as much as the ongoing investigation into Russian campaign meddling.

More interestingly, Trump may struggle to find his way to higher approval. Recent polls have been very consistent in giving the President low approval ratings. A CNN/SSRS poll has the President at 36% – a fall from 42% in August.  Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s approval stands at 55%.

Americans also question Trump’s intelligence. His ratings on intelligence have dropped over the last few months, with just 51% saying they believe he’s intelligent. Though this is still the majority of voters, it is an historically low figure. In November 2016, 74% of respondents said he was intelligent.

Trump’s falling approval rating and the poor perception of his intelligence are likely due to recent revelations surrounding veteran journalist’s Bob Woodward’s book and other revelations from ex-staffers, including Omarosa Manigault Newman. Trump’s intelligence ha been called into question by his own aides, many of whom are quoted in Woodward’s book calling the President a moron or variations on that theme.
