Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly: I’ll Give Trump $5 Billion For The Wall

Senator Joe Donnelly has said he is willing to vote funding for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico. The Indiana Democrat is in a vulnerable position this November as he faces re-election, and he has sided with Trump in the past.

Donnelly is facing a tough re-election fight against Republican Mike Braun, who has criticized Donnelly for his position on immigration. This is despite Donnelly voting in favor of Trump’s immigration bill, which cut legal immigration and provided funding for the border wall.

Donnelly says he does not want Trump to shut down the government because of wall funding. The President has threatened to do so, but the threat has not yet materialized. Trump would come into conflict with his own party if he sought a shutdown. But Donnelly may be more concerned with his own future. He is vulnerable to attacks from his right as Republicans aim to unseat him.

The Senate Appropriations Committee will give Trump $1.6bn for the wall but Donnelly believes Trump could get more.

“I’m fine with providing him some more. I actually voted for border wall funding three different times,” Donnelly told POLITICO.

Speaking in billions of dollars, Donnelly said: ““I’m fine with that. I’m fine with $3, $3.5, $4 or $5”

Greater funding for the border wall would be seen as a political victory for the President, though it may not be enough to save Donnelly’s seat in Indiana. Donnelly is a key moderate in a red state and his vulnerability in the midterms has convinced him to back Trump’s agenda.
