Sarah Sanders Refuses To Say That The Media Is Not The ‘Enemy Of The People’

Prior to Thursday’s White House press briefing, presidential daughter and White House senior adviser Invanka Trump said — after much prodding — that she did not agree with her father that the media was the enemy of the people. At the briefing, however, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to back that sentiment, despite being given multiple opportunities to do so.

After first asking a question about Ms. Trump’s remarks by reading off a litany of grievances she and the president have with the press, Sanders was confronted by CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta and asked if she would tell the press corps that she did not see them as the American public’s enemy. Instead, she read off more grievances, making note of the WHCD appearance of Michelle Wolf while complaining about being harassed in public.

“You did not say in the course of those remarks that you just made that the press is not the enemy of the people,” Acosta countered. “Are we to take it from what you just said — we all get put through the wringer, we all get put through the meat grinder in this town and you’re not an exception and I’m sorry that happened to you.”

He continued, “I wish that did not happen. For the sake of this room, for the people in this room, this democracy, this country, all the people around the world are watching what you are saying and the White House for the United States of America, the President of the United States should not refer to us as the enemy of the people. His own daughter acknowledges that and all I’m asking is you acknowledge that right here and right now.”

Sanders again refused to say she believed the press wasn’t the enemy, saying she appreciated and shared Acosta’s “passion.”

“I’ve addressed this question,” she added. “I’ve addressed my personal feelings. I’m here to speak on behalf of the president. He’s made his statements clear.”

And that was that. So, basically, what we can take from that exchange is that Sanders is merely there to speak for the president and the president feels the media is the “enemy of the people.” Got it.
