Joe Biden Beats Donald Trump In 2020 Presidential Poll

Joe Biden leads Donald Trump by 7 points in a new poll on the 2020 presidential election. The former vice president beat President Trump in a head-to-head comparison carried out by POLITICO/Morning Consult. The poll comes after significant speculation about Biden’s presidential ambitions. Trump has also suggested he would like to run against Biden.

The poll found that 44 percent of respondents chose Biden over Trump in the hypothetical 2020 presidential match-up. Just 37 percent opted for Trump. Democrats were largely in favor of Biden, with 80 percent saying they would vote for him. Among Republicans, 78 percent said they would vote for Donald Trump if he ran again.

However, the polls results are not all good for Biden. Democrats polled prefer an unnamed, generic candidate to Biden, with 89 percent choosing this hypothetical candidate. Though this means Biden is not as popular with Democrats as he could be, gauging support for ‘generic candidates’ is little more than a polling exercise.

Biden was elected vice president in 2008 and served throughout President Barack Obama’s two terms. He has run for the Democratic nomination for president twice – in 1988 and 2008 – but speculation about his future has grown as he has publicly criticized President Trump.

Apart from Obama and former Bill and Hillary Clinton, Biden is the most high profile Democrat still in public life. Some pollsters believe he can win over blue collar workers in swing states, many of whom voted for Trump in 2016.

The poll is not good news for Trump. The President won the 2016 election in the electoral college but lost the popular vote. The poll shows Biden currently has less popular support than Hillary Clinton had. Clinton won 48.2 percent of the vote. However, Trump’s numbers are down significantly on 2016, when he won 46.1 percent of the popular vote. If the poll results were replicated in the election, it is highly unlikely Trump could win even in the electoral college.
