Neera Tanden On Melania’s ‘I Really Don’t Care’ Jacket: ‘Maybe It’s A Moment Of True Candor’

Boarding her plane for a surprise visit to the Texas border to visit facilities holding migrant children who had been separated from their families due to her husband’s policy, First Lady Melania Trump apparently thought it would be a swell idea to wear a jacket that was emblazoned with the slogan “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?”. As one would imagine, this raised more than a few eyebrows and caused a bunch of head-shaking.

During a CNN panel discussion Thursday afternoon, liberal pundit and Center for American Progress president Neera Tanden said that perhaps Mrs. Trump was just letting us all know how she really felt about the crisis.

After CNN political reporter Nia-Malika Henderson and pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson criticized the first lady for stepping on a potentially good news story during a period of highly negative press and wondering aloud why she couldn’t have just chosen a different rain jacket, Tanden chimed in.

“Maybe it’s a moment of true candor from her,” the former Hillary Clinton advisor said. “I mean, this administration doesn’t care about these kids. They obviously don’t care about these kids.”

Anchor Jake Tapper interjected, asking Tanden if she really believed that Melania Trump didn’t care about migrant children and their plight, adding that she made a trip down there today.

“I’m not saying she doesn’t,” the Democratic power-player responded. “Maybe she’s just telegraphing for the world the reality of what’s going on. Because she’s living with Donald Trump, who as she’s going to the border, is attacking Democrats and still talking about immigrants as if they’re all gang members.”

She concluded, “At the end of the day, the reality is this White House has not seen these children as human beings and that is why we have the policy we have and I’m glad there’s an uproar in America. But the only reason why Melania went down there or Ivanka is tweeting is because there is a public backlash. Not because they cared about these kids a week ago, two weeks ago or a month ago.”
