CNN’s Kirsten Powers Shreds Melania: Her Jacket ‘Should Just Say Let Them Eat Cake’

First Lady Melania Trump caused jaws to drop and brows to furrow when she wore a jacket that read “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” as she boarded the plane for her trip to the Texas border to see shelters where migrant children separated from their parents were being held. The first lady decided to wear that jacket again after she came back from her visit, despite it already becoming a thing on cable news and social media.

During a CNN panel discussion Thursday night, CNN political analyst Kirsten Powers did not let up on Mrs. Trump, essentially calling her an out-of-touch aristocratic elite over her wardrobe choice.

“It’s crisis 101 not to distract from your mission, anchor Anderson Cooper said. “If you’re on a mission to show you care to wear a giant sign that says I don’t care — I literally thought it was a joke. I thought someone had put that up on Twitter and sort of doctored it or photoshopped it.”

According to Powers, this is the Trump administration’s “core message.”

“She would go down there and do this tells us everything that we need to know,” she continued. “She’s officially the Marie Antoinette of this situation. It should just say ‘let them eat cake.’ That is literally the message she is sending– that they just don’t care about what’s happening there.”

Powers went on to point out that this was intentional and “not an accident” as the first lady — a former fashion model — is very careful about what she wears. She also noted that the president has tweeted that his wife’s jacket was really a message to the “Fake News Media,” revealing that neither of them care about what is going on with the children.

“I’m going to say she doesn’t care,” Powers concluded. “I don’t think we need to overanalyze it.”
