50 Veteran Republicans Sign Letter Calling Trump The ‘Most Reckless’ Candidate in History

Donald Trump would be the most reckless president in history, according to a letter signed by 50 veteran Republican officials. Operatives from the George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan administrations added their names to the denunciation of Trump.

Experts in national security and foreign policy warned that Trump was ‘dangerous’ and he had an ‘alarming ignorance’ of world affairs while displaying no interest in learning about it. The letter contrasted Trump’s ignorance with previous candidates who lacked foreign policy knowledge. In a nod to George W. Bush, the letter said other presidential candidates had made an effort to learn.

“From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump is not qualified to be President and Commander-in-Chief,” the letter writers say, “Indeed, we are convinced that he would be a dangerous President and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being.”

The intervention from such a large number of Republican experts and big names is practically unprecedented in US history. The decision to publicly attack the GOP candidate’s dangerous approach to policy is a sign of just how worried many Republicans and experts are about Trump’s behavior.

The Trump campaign was quick to dismiss the letter, claiming the signatories are part of the ‘failed Washington elite’ responsible for the ‘chaos’ in the world. It will not be easy for Trump to shrug off this latest criticism, however. Several senior Republicans have already abandoned Trump, with some openly endorsing Hillary Clinton.

A new #NeverTrump candidate, Evan McMullin is appealing to conservatives dissatisfied with Trump. McMullin is a former CIA officer and could cause a major upset in several states where Trump is polling poorly. McMullin’s national security credentials and conservatism, combined with the attack on Trump from 50 Republican experts, could lose Trump votes on reliably red states.
