Chris Hayes: ‘Only Reasonable Conclusion’ Is Trump Didn’t Test Negative for COVID Before Debate with Biden

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes suggested on Friday that the White House’s failure to say when President Donald Trump last tested negative for COVID-19 could indicate that he did not test negative before the first presidential debate with former Vice President Joe Biden.

The administration, and the president himself, haven’t given a straight answer on Trump’s testing history. They’ve repeatedly dodged questions about his most recent negative test and Hayes argued there was an obvious reason for this obfuscation.

“They’ve been doing this for a week now and the only reasonable conclusion is that the president did not actually test negative before he got in a room with former vice president Joe Biden, a man of 77 years, for last week’s debate,” Hayes said.

“That despite a negative test being one of the conditions for participating in that debate.”

“In other words it appears we dodged an enormous bullet of having two candidates over 70 with the coronavirus,” he said.

Hayes also surveyed the state of the presidential race generally, saying Trump was so far behind Biden he was now nearly in the same territory as Jimmy Carter or Herbert Hoover. He also noted that there may not be extenuating circumstances to help Trump, as there were in 2016.

“He is spending multiple hours a day talking to right wing media, ranting, and desperately seeking some kind of magic trick to spring him from the trap that he has set for himself,” Hayes said.

That potential magic trick involved “publicly hectoring his attorney general to just round up his political enemies.”
