Joe Scarborough: Republicans Need to Speak Out Against Trump Gutting the Post Office

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough warned Republicans on Monday that they needed to come out and defend the U.S. Postal Service as President Donald Trump works to undermine it. The Morning Joe host reminded the GOP that the post office has a huge approval rating.

Scarborough began by mocking White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows for claiming that there was no evidence voter fraud wasn’t happening. He dismissed Meadows’ claim and then linked it to the President’s attacks on USPS. He pointed to Trump’s comments about funding the post office and mail-in ballots.

“At the same time Donald Trump is saying that, the post office, of course, undergoing this restructuring,”Scarborough said.

“Sowing chaos throughout the entire system and telling 44 states they may not be able to get their mail-in ballots in time. Rev [Al Sharpton], here’s the thing about Trump and [Postmaster General Louis] DeJoy. They keep talking about how lousy the United States Postal Service is, they keep talking about how horrible the institution is.”

“Pew survey sometime ago did a survey of Americans and guess what they found? The United States post office is the most respected, the most favorably viewed institution in all of government – 91% of Americans have a favorable view of the United States post office. And that was just from this year at the end of March.”

“And so — so again, yes, this is very frightening and the President’s trying to disenfranchise millions of people because he believes he’s going to lose. But this is also a stupid political move. You’ve got Susan Collins who’s supporting a President who is trying to gut an institution with a 91% approval rating. You’ve got Martha McSally trying to gut an institution that’s got a 91% approval rating.”

“You have Corey Gardner supporting a president who is trying to gut an institution with a 91% approval rating with the American public. You got Thom Tillis doing the same thing, Marco Rubio doing the same thing. Will Ben Sasse speak out? Will Mitt Romney speak out? They need to because nine out of ten Americans have a favorable viewing of the post office.”

“Trump doesn’t like it because he wants to privatize it and turn it over to people that he’s given billion dollar tax breaks to and he wants to use it to punish Amazon and he also wants to do everything he can to stir doubt in the results of an election he thinks he’s gonna lose. So why do Republicans stand behind him as he attacks the most popular institution in the United States government?
