Schumer Says Coronavirus Executive Actions Are ‘Just What Trump Does: A Big Show But It Doesn’t Do Anything’

President Trump signed an executive order and three memoranda at his Bedminster, NJ golf club Saturday that he says will provide economic aid, including additional unemployment benefits and employee tax cuts, to those affected by the coronavirus. But the moves could face legal challenges because they bypass Congress, which has been deadlocked on how to extend relief packages.

Under Trump’s plan, states would have to cover 25% of the additional $400 in unemployment benefits, which would come from disaster relief funds. In another memorandum, payroll taxes would be deferred for those making less than $100,000 a year, but would still be owed at a later date.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday criticized the president’s executive actions as “unworkable, weak and far too narrow.”

“The event at the country club is just what Trump does: a big show but it doesn’t do anything,” Schumer told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s This Week. “Most states will take months to implement it because it’s brand new…and many states, because they have to chip in $100, they don’t have money [and] won’t do it.”

Schumer added that the moves would destabilize social security, echoing what Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), the Democratic chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, told the AP: “This decree is a poorly disguised first step in an effort to fully dismantle these vital programs by executive fiat.”
