Trump Wonders What 19 Means in Covid-19, Calls it ‘Kung Flu’ at Arizona Rally

President Donald Trump spoke at an event in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday and along with his usual rally performance, he riffed on Coronavirus, even wondering why the number 19 was in the name of the disease, and indulging in language the World Health Organization has advised against.

“I said the other night, there’s never been anything where they have so many names. I could give you 19 or 20 names for that, all different names, right? Wuhah — Wuhan was catching on,” Trump said.

“Coronavirus, right? Kung flu?” he said.

The audience applauded approvingly when Trump used the phrase ‘Kung flu’, which has been widely criticized as racist. The President was speaking to Students for Trump and had a better turnout in Phoenix than in Tulsa, Oklahoma over the weekend.

“Covid-19, Covid. I said what’s the 19? Covid-19? Some people can’t explain,” he went on. The number represents the year the virus was identified – 2019.

“Some people call it the Chinese flu, the China flu,” Trump said. “But here’s the story: we’re going to be stronger than ever before.”
