Crowds at Michigan Capitol Not Wearing Masks Are ‘Devastatingly Worrisome,’ Dr. Birx Says

Dr. Deborah Birx expressed her disapproval of protesters in Michigan gathering without face masks, demanding that the state be reopened.

Birx was first asked about Dr. Anthony Fauci’s comment that states who reopen too early risk a second wave of coronavirus cases.

“We’ve made it clear that the guidelines are based on very strong evidence and data, and that is the way Dr. Fauci is also driven,” Birx told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday. “We want to make sure that every individual, every employer, and every person knows how to keep themselves safe in this situation.”

Wallace then asked about Michigan in particular, noting how crowds of protesters entered the capitol building and lingered there, many choosing not to wear masks.

“It’s devastatingly worrisome to me, personally,” Birx replied, “because if they go home and infect their grandmother or their grandfather who has a morbid condition and they have a series or very unfortunate outcome, they will feel guilty for the rest of their lives. So we need to protect each other at the same time we’re voicing our discontent.”

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently issued three executive orders allowing her to extend the state’s stay-at-home order through the end of May.
