Mike Huckabee Compares Violating Coronavirus Restrictions to Speeding: We Don’t Shut Down the World

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee took a blasé approach to Coronavirus measures on Wednesday. Speaking to Fox & Friends, Huckabee suggested there was no need for stringent lockdowns even if some people violated the restrictions.

The Fox News hosts asked Huckabee about stay-at-home orders and praised Florida, which has come under criticism from public health experts.

“The one thing, Steve [Doocy], I think that people just failed to factor in is the personal responsibility level,” Huckabee said.

The former governor said governors shouldn’t ‘crack down’ to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Ultimately it’s the decision of the citizens to decide to the degree and frankly across the entire country, most people have self-quarantined. I haven’t left my house in six and a half weeks now. But I didn’t do that because the government told me to stay home. I did it because I said, you know, can I do most of what I do from home. A lot of people can’t. Even though all of my events that I have scheduled have canceled.”

“My point is this no matter what rules you put in place, some people are gonna break them. There are people who speed in their cars no matter what the speed limits are. There are people who smoke and drink too much and act irresponsibly and recklessly. That doesn’t mean that you ought to shut down the entire world because of a few people who are reckless with their lives.”

“And I think we are missing that Americans are basically overall responsible people. Treat them like adults. Tell them the truth. Be transparent about what the issues are. What the risk are. For Heaven’s sake, don’t strip their liberties away and take all of the healthy people and quarantine them even while you are letting inmates out of jails in places like New York.”

The point of lockdowns and social distancing is to prevent the spread of a potentially deadly disease. Some conservatives have already violated these measures on ways that public health experts say put lives at risk.
