Newt Gingrich: Trump’s Coronavirus Response ‘Reminds Me a Lot of Theodore Roosevelt’

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich lavished praise on President Donald Trump on Monday and compared him to Theodore Roosevelt. Gingrich told Fox & Friends that Trump was similar to Roosevelt in terms of personality and attitude – a comparison that will puzzle historians.

“I’ve been watching President Trump with his briefings and bringing in CEOs of companies and bringing in experts. He reminds me a lot of Theodore Roosevelt,” Gingrich said.

“Roosevelt as this very aggressive, entrepreneurial personality,” Gingrich said before going on to list schoolboy facts about the 26th president.

“This is a guy who created the Panama canal. He did all sorts of things,” he said approvingly.

“There’s a lot of parallel between the entrepreneurial style and Trump, which is part of what drives the news media and some of the academics crazy. Entrepreneurial personalities don’t fit the political science model of the presidency. And Theodore Roosevelt was probably the other great example of that.”

“There’s a lot we can learn. Part of it is do what works. Don’t assume automatically that the so-called experts are right. Keep pushing. You saw the President do this is the anti-malaria drugs.”

“So in a sense you have this surging, aggressive personality. The  downside is sometimes you can make a mistake. That’s the nature of whether it was Theodore Roosevelt or Donald Trump that’s the nature of entrepreneurial personalities.”

Roosevelt was a war hero, a voracious reader, a committed Christian and later a self-styled Progressive who called the Republican Party a ‘rotting husk.’
