‘Morning Joe’: Ron DeSantis’ ‘Wreckless’ Response to Coronavirus in Florida Could Endanger Trump’s Reelection

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and John Heilemann criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for his response to the Coronavirus outbreak on Tuesday and speculated that it could harm President Donald Trump’s chances in the crucial swing state.

“The callousness of this all, the Governor’s refusal to shut down the state so teenagers and people in their 20s can continue to get sun and continue to party, that’s something that I suspect, talking to seniors I’ve been talking to in the state of Florida and a lot of Trump supporters, that’s not going to be forgotten this fall,” Scarborough said.

Heilemann said that Florida is a crucial state in the 2020 presidential election and winning it would be a huge victory for Democrats.

“There’s so much on the line in Florida and Governor DeSantis’ decisions here have been inexplicable in a lot of respects, almost as inexplicable as the decisions of the President to attack Governor Whitmer of Michigan, a state he knows he must win,” Heilemann said.

“She is sitting on a 75 or 80% approval rating in Michigan. To see President Trump attacking her is politically insane.”

“But the Florida question really looms large. You think about the states that are feeling this in the most severe way, places like New York where I am, out in California, obviously, they mostly hard-core blue states.

“But Florida, if you listen to all the scientists and the epidemiologists, is the place where the next big disaster could be coming and the Governor’s behavior, close ally of President Trump’s, could end up really being in the end, if it’s right that the Coronavirus and the handling of it end up being the central issue of the 2020 election, what’s happened in Florida could end up being the central state where the central failures took place that could put President Trump’s re-election out of reach.”
