Alan Dershowitz Denies He Said the President Can Do Anything to Get Reelected if It’s in the ‘Public Interest’

Alan Dershowitz has taken to Twitter to deny he said something that he very clearly said on the Senate floor on Wednesday. Speaking in defense of President Donald Trump, Dershowitz said that a president can do anything to secure reelection if he judges it to be in the ‘public interest.’

“They characterized my argument as if I had said that if a president believes that his re-election was in the national interest, he can do anything. I said nothing like that, as anyone who actually heard what I said can attest,” Dershowitz said.

As many were quick to point out, Dershowitz’ denial is simply not credible. What he said was clear and was not taken out of context or distorted.

Dershowitz’ complaint doesn’t even amount to backtracking on his claims in the Senate. Rather, it seems to be a form of gaslighting the public and blaming the media for the backlash he’s received.

Even Nixon administration veteran John Dean interpreted Dershowitz’ statement as a complete vindication of presidential abuse of power.
