The Republican Party Is ‘Completely Devoid of Honor,’ Ex-GOP Congressman Says

Former Republican congressman David Jolly shared his thoughts on the future of his former party on MSNBC Saturday morning as President Trump’s legal team begins its argument against his removal by the Senate.

Jolly indicated the president’s support among Republican senators is an indicator of the death of the party, which he says has become “devoid of honor.”

“The founders expected [that] truth as a currency would somehow always win out, but we are not living in that era,” Jolly said. “It is an interesting place — as the nation watches the impeachment hearing — to be a lifelong Republican recently having left the party, watching this. There is a solemnness to watching a party you once knew now be completely devoid of honor.”

The fact that the Republican-led Senate voted down several amendments calling for subpoenas for witnesses and documents shows the extent to which the party has supported Trump, Jolly added.

“What we are watching is the GOP leadership in the nation advancing essentially the second article of impeachment,” he said, referencing the charge of obstruction of Congress. “There is no honor in obstructing the accountability of somebody who has committed wrongdoing; that is what we are seeing at the hands of the Republican Party.”

Jolly also pointed the finger at members of Congress who have cozied up to the president to spite his opponents.

“Where the party has veered is that they celebrate this corrupt president,” Jolly said. “It is not that they merely support him; they are celebrating him almost with a vengeance.”
