Trump Will Unveil His Middle East Peace Plan Next Week

President Donald Trump is widely expected to unveil his plan for peace in the Middle East following comments he made on Air Force One on Thursday. Trump has often mentioned having a plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but has never actually offered one.

“It’s a great plan,” Trump said. “It’s a plan that really would work.”

Trump will reportedly reveal the plan before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the White House on Tuesday. He will also meet with Netanyahu’s political opponent, Benny Gantz. Both men performed well in recent elections and may need to work together.

However, the Palestinians have already rejected any Trump peace proposals. The administration is seen as too pro-Israel to be an honest broker. Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel outraged the Palestinian leadership and severely damaged any chance of the U.S. acting as a mediator.

“We’ve spoken to them briefly,” Trump said of the Palestinians. “But we will speak to them in a period of time.”

Trump acknowledged that Palestinians may not like his plan at first. It is likely to heavily favor Israel as this administration has abandoned the long-held U.S. policy on a two-state solution. Any plan that does not include a Palestinian state will be rejected out of hand.
