Fox’s Steve Doocy: Trump Could Use State of the Union to ‘Be His Own Witness’ on Impeachment

The House of Representatives will present the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate today and there’s much speculation about what kind of defense President Donald Trump and the Republicans might mount. One piece of advice came from Trump’s favorite morning show, Fox & Friends.

“You know, but the problem is the State of the Union could still happen during the impeachment process in which case the President will be there in the House and he will be right out there, 100 jurors. He’ll make his case directly to them,” co-host Steve Doocy said.

“I say he postpones if that happens,” co-host Brian Kilmeade said, not without some justification.

“Well, we’ll see,” Doocy said. “There are a number of Republicans who say, Mr President, why don’t you postpone it?”

“But if I were him or you gotta figure the way Donald Trump thinks, he’s a disrupter,” Doocy went on. “In the middle of it, it would be his his opportunity to be his own witness without being cross-examined.”

Doocy’s suggestion could well be taken up by Trump if the State of the Union speech falls, as widely expected, during the impeachment trial. However, it would unprecedented and in many ways wildly inappropriate for Trump to use the speech to defend himself. It would also not count as evidence in the trial.
