Trump Said GOP Senators Involved in Impeachment Trial Pressured Him on Soleimani

President Donald Trump has reportedly claimed that some Republican senators to deal with Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal. Trump and his allies have denied the killing had anything to do with impeachment.

In an article examining the strike and discussing Trump’s national security team, the WSJ report strongly suggests that Trump had the upcoming impeachment trial on his mind when he decided to kill the senior Iranian official/

“Mr. Trump, after the strike, told associates he was under pressure to deal with Gen. Soleimani from GOP senators he views as important supporters in his coming impeachment trial in the Senate, associates said,” the newspaper reports.

Some had already accused Trump of using Iran to distract from impeachment – something fiercely denied by administration officials and his media surrogates. But if the report is true, then it provides evidence of Trump’s state of mind when he ordered the killing.

It’s worth noting that Trump has told several thousand lies since coming to office and it would not be out of character for him to blame Republican senators for an action which has proven widely unpopular and controversial. However, even if the statement is untrue, it calls into question the reasoning behind Soleimani’s killing.
