Trump on China Trade Deal: ‘Better to Wait Until After the Election’

President Donald Trump has suggested the U.S. trade deal with China could wait until after the 2020 presidential election. Speaking in London ahead of a NATO summit, Trump made the important comment about what will be a crucial deal.

“The China trade deal is dependent on one thing: do I want to make it? I have no deadline,” the President said.

“In some ways, I think it’s better to wait until after the election if you want to know the truth.”

Trump’s remarks will not be welcomed either in China or at home. He’s been pushing for a new trade deal with China since coming to office and has imposed more and more tariffs in order to get what he considers a fairer deal. These tariffs have in turn led government bailouts for farmers.

Trump’s comments suggest he wants to make the China deal a part of his 2020 re-election bid. The President and his supporters have repeatedly pushed the idea that Trump is strong on the economy and a Democratic administration would damage it.

However, Trump’s admission today could end up costing him. The lack of a trade deal with China and the ongoing trade wars, recently escalated with new tariffs, are hurting the very voters he needs to win.
