Fox’s Tom Homan: The U.S. Should Fight Drug Cartels in Mexico Like ‘In Panama with Noriega’

Fox News contributor Tom Homan has told Fox & Friends that the U.S. should go into Mexico to fight drug cartels. The former director of ICE compared the idea favorably to the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989 when Manuel Noriega was dictator.

Homan said he appreciated what Mexican law enforcement had done but that it wasn’t enough.

“They’re not well-trained, they’re not well-equipped and they certainly don’t have the expertise at dismantling large criminal organizations like the U.S. law enforcement does,” Homan said.

“We’ve proven that in Panama with Noriega, we proved that in Colombia with Chapo,” Homan said. “The United States can go down to Mexico and help them address this crisis once and for all.”

Homan is essentially suggesting a U.S. invasion of Mexico – something that would be greeted with opposition from the Mexican government and horror from the rest of the world. However, Homan is not the first figure on the right to seriously suggest sending U.S. troops into Mexico to fight drug cartels.

Combating drug trafficking was one of the United States’ justifications for invading Panama during George H.W. Bush’s administration. However, there were other reasons, including safeguarding democracy in the country. It would be difficult to make the same case for Mexico.
