Impeachment Witness Fiona Hill Calls Out Republicans’ ‘Fictional Narrative’ of Ukraine Election Interference

White House official Fiona Hill scolded Republicans for pursuing a ‘fictional narrative’ that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 election and will remind them that it was, in fact, Russia that meddled. Hill testified before the public impeachment hearings on Thursday morning.

“Based on questions and statements I have heard, some of you on this committee appear to believe that Russia and its security services did not conduct a campaign against our country—and that perhaps, somehow, for some reason, Ukraine did,” Hill said, in her opening statement, which has been released to the press.

“This is a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.”

Some of the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee have attempted to push a conspiracy theory about Ukraine interfering in the 2016 election, ignoring evidence from the U.S. national security agencies showing it was Russia.

“The unfortunate truth is that Russia was the foreign power that systematically attacked our democratic institutions in 2016,” Hill said. “This is the public conclusion of our intelligence agencies, confirmed in bipartisan Congressional reports. It is beyond dispute, even if some of the underlying details must remain classified.”

“Right now, Russia’s security services and their proxies have geared up to repeat their interference in the 2020 election. We are running out of time to stop them. In the course of this investigation, I would ask that you please not promote politically driven falsehoods that so clearly advance Russian interests.”
